Ukrainian Energy and Coal Minister Ihor Nasalyk says that boosting electricity exports from Ukraine to the European Union is a priority and suggests completion of two nuclear power units of Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant (NPP).

"We suggest a Ukraine-EU energy bridge project – to upgrade the 750 kV Khmelnyk-Rzeszow, restart electricity exports and complete the third and fourth power units of Khmelnytsky NPP," he said at the Energo Spring 2016 Congress in Kyiv on Thursday.

The minister also supported the implementation of a project to build a centralized nuclear fuel storage facility jointly with U.S. Holtec to ensure Ukraine's energy security and relax the country's dependence on Russia.

Energoatom operates all the four operating NPPs in Ukraine. It handles 15 VVER-type power units whose total installed capacity is 13.84 GW.

In November 2015, President of national nuclear energy company Energoatom Yuriy Nedashkovsky said that Czech-based Skoda had confirmed readiness to participate in the completion of Khmelnytsky NPP and will produce two sets of reactor plant equipment.

Talks on the commercial conditions of cooperation with Skoda began after Ukraine's parliament gave up an agreement on Khmelnytsky NPP completion with Russia.

Energoatom's head said that the completion may cost Ukraine about EUR 4 billion.
