Infrastructure ministry initiates building of new moor handling port on Black Sea

The Infrastructure Ministry of Ukraine has drawn up a project to construct a new port which will handle cargo at moors and will be located in the Dnipro-Bug estuary.

The ministry's press service reported, referring to First Deputy Minister Volodymyr Shulmeister, the scheme of the operation of the new port will be the following: cargos in small batches using low-tonnage fleet will be brought to the sea and they will be handed over to large-tonnage fleet at the new port.

"The new port would allow for servicing large-tonnage ships of the Panamax and Postpanamax type (up to 100,000 tonnes). It is important that the cargo that arrives from the river does not enter the usual seaport at all and at once goes to the moor handling. This saves times and money for cargo owners," he said.

The ministry said that the moor handling will be an incentive for developing cargo shipment on the Dnipro River which will stir up shipbuilding in Ukraine and increase the exports opportunities of the country.

The project is being agreed on at the ministry. The next steps are to agree it with the Cabinet of Ministers, to earmark a water area, and to create another brand Sea Port Authority of Ukraine.

It is planned that budget investment in the project will be up to UAH 33 million. Under the plan, the new port will start operating in the summer of 2016.
