Ukraine and Russia have struck a compromise over paying for Russian gas and its purchase by Ukraine's national oil and gas company Naftogaz Ukrainy, Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Eduard Stavytsky said.

"Gas is being delivered, the issue of financing and payment is [settled]," the minister said in Kyiv on Monday.

The parties were available to avoid "the formalities that cropped up in the middle of September and beginning of October," Stavytsky said.

Asked about Naftogaz's resumption of gas purchases and amounts, he said, "We're proceeding on schedule, from 45 to 90 million cubic meters a day." This is the schedule worked out for the current heating season, he said.

Naftogaz stopped buying gas from Gazprom on November 8.

On November 14, Gazprom invited Naftogaz to seek a compromise solution and said it was ready to offer a new payment extension on Naftogaz's $1.3 billion debt for gas.

Following talks with Naftogaz CEO Yevhen Bakulin, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said Naftogaz agreed to resume purchasing gas in accordance with existing contracts and to stop withdrawing gas from underground storage.

On November 17 Gazprom reported that Naftogaz had resumed importing Russian gas in the usual volumes.
