Bulgaria can provide EUR80 mln to Ukraine – acting PM
Bulgaria may provide EUR 80 million to Ukraine at the NATO summit, but "this or any other amount" will be known after a parliamentary vote, said acting Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev, Radio Bulgaria reported on Friday.
"Our main goal is to protect our national interests as a NATO ally," Glavchev noted regarding Bulgaria's position at the summit. However, Glavchev did not specify what the funds would be allocated for.
The report also states that earlier today, the leader of the GERB party (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria), Boyko Borissov, said that Bulgaria would not give Ukraine money in cash. The co-chairman of the DPS party (Movement for Rights and Freedoms), Delyan Peevski, explained that there is no contradiction in the statements of Glavchev and Borissov.
"This money will not be directly transferred by our country to Ukraine, but will be deducted from the amounts Bulgaria receives for the armaments provided to Kyiv," Peevski said.
Glavchev also welcomed proposals made in the parliamentary hall for Bulgaria to act as a mediator in peace negotiations or peace initiatives between Russia and Ukraine.
"The only thing to emphasize is that these peace negotiations must comply with international law," Glavchev noted.
Earlier reports indicated that Bulgarian President Rumen Radev refused to participate in the NATO summit in Washington from July 9-11, as he disagreed with the country's obligations regarding support for Ukraine.
