The documentary "20 Days in Mariupol" by Mstyslav Chernov won the Best Documentary Feature category at the Oscars of the U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts, the Associated Press said.

At the award ceremony, Chernov took the stage to receive the award.

"Cinema forms memories, and memories form history," Chernov said.

The Associated Press and PBS Frontline team who produced the documentary received thunderous applause from the audience. This is the first Oscar for both Ukraine and the Associated Press.

The documentary "20 Days in Mariupol" tells the story of the first weeks of fighting in Mariupol, Donetsk region, during Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Director and photographer Chernov, photographer Yevheniy Maloletka and producer and journalist Vasylisa Stepanenko worked on the film. They became the last journalists to cover the beginning of Russia's destruction of Mariupol – for which all three received a Pulitzer Prize.

The film became the highest-grossing documentary film in Ukraine last year, collecting UAH 500,000 only in the first weekend of release.

As reported, the documentary "20 Days in Mariupol" received the BAFTA award from the British Academy of Film.
