Borrell: We will continue to arm, support Ukraine to end war

High Representative of the European Union Josep Borrell has said that in order to end the war waged by Russia against Ukraine, it is necessary to continue to arm Ukraine and put pressure on the Kremlin.

"This war must be ended as soon as possible. But how will it be finished? The sooner the better, but not by any means, because if this means Ukraine will be a country in ruins, territorially dismantled, neutralized, with millions of people in exile and millions of dead, then no. We don't want the war to end like this. And in order to prevent this from happening, we must continue to support Ukraine. Therefore, we must continue to arm Ukraine and provide even more support. We want to give more weapons. This is what Ukrainians expect from us, and this is what we are doing and we must do even more and faster," Borrell said, speaking at the European Parliament on Wednesday.

He recalled that the EU has already provided Ukraine with arms and weapons in the amount of EUR 1 billion.

"It may look like a lot, but the fact that we pay Putin every day for energy that he supplies us, we have paid him EUR 35 billion since the beginning of the war. Comparing this to the EUR 1 billion we have provided Ukraine, for weapons. That is a huge difference and should highlight the importance and need to reduce our dependency. Today, we have put an end to coal, but this is only a small part of the bill (which the EU pays for energy to the Kremlin)," Borrell said.

In this regard, he reiterated the need for the EU to become independent and energy autonomous.
