China not in mood to indifferently watch situation in Ukraine, not to mention adding fuel to fire – representative to UN

China cannot remain indifferent watching the situation in Ukraine from the outside, not to mention adding fuel to the fire, Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of China to the UN, has said.

"In the issue of Ukraine, China is not seeking geopolitical self-interest. We are not in the mood to watch the situation from the sidelines, not to mention adding fuel to the fire. There is only one goal that we sincerely desire, and that is peace. China will continue to promote peace talks and play a constructive and responsible role to help resolve the crisis in Ukraine," Jun said at a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Ukraine in New York on Tuesday.

The diplomat said that China has provided and will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and neighboring countries.

"According to international law, civilians must be spared any form of violence in armed conflicts. Attacks on civilians are unacceptable and must not occur. The reports and images of civilian deaths in Bucha are very disconcerting, and the relevant circumstances and specific causes of the incident must be verified and established," Jun said.
