Ukrainian foreign ministry calls on world to increase pressure on Moscow to free Sentsov

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has once again called on foreign partners and international organizations to increase pressure on Russia with the goal of freeing Ukrainian filmmaker Oleh Sentsov, who has been on hunger strike for a hundred days, and other Ukrainian political prisoners.

"Sentsov has been on hunger strike for 100 days. A terrible figure. Human life is the highest value. We demand that Russia immediately release Oleh," Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mariana Betsa wrote in her Twitter microblog on Tuesday.

"We appeal to our partners and international organizations to increase pressure on Russia for #SaveOlegSentsov and the release of Ukrainian political prisoners in Russia," she said.

The North Caucasus District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don ruled in August 2015 to sentence Sentsov, who was detained in Crimea in 2014, to 20 years in a high-security penitentiary for plotting a terrorist attack there.

Sentsov declared a hunger strike on May 14, 2018 to demand that all Ukrainians held in Russia "on political motives" be freed. Sentsov's relatives said that his condition had seriously deteriorated.
