MPs propose parliament ask president to speed up Gontareva's dismissal as NBU governor

A group of people's deputies has registered in the Verkhovna Rada a resolution proposing that the parliament ask President Petro Poroshenko to immediately dismiss Valeriya Gontareva as governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

According to the former head of the parliamentary committee for financial policy and banking, Serhiy Rybalka, the initiators of the decision, in addition to him, are Mykhailo Dovbenko, Pavlo Rizanenko (both from the Bloc of Petro Poroshenko), Viktor Romaniuk and Maksym Poliakov (both from the People's Front).

"The parliament cannot stand aside and watch that the NBU has been working without a leader for the eighth month already, which is not normal. Of course, we cannot oblige the president to introduce a motion about dismissal, but we must state the inadmissibility of delay," Rybalka said.

It is expected that the resolution comes into force from the date of its adoption.

Gontareva sent in her resignation request to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on April 6, 2017. She was on paid vacation starting from May 11, 2017. First Deputy NBU Governor Yakiv Smolii was appointed as acting head of the central bank. Until now, Gontareva is on leave and does not plan to return to work at the NBU.

The media said the main candidate for the post of NBU governor was Raiffeisen Bank Aval CEO Volodymyr Lavrenchuk.
