Saakashvili placed in temporary detention facility

Leader of the Movement of New Forces Party and ex-President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili has been placed in a temporary detention facility in Kyiv, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko has said.

"In keeping with an arrest warrant, members of the National Police have located Saakashvili on Kyiv's Vidradna Street and detained him. The detainee has been placed in a temporary detention facility," he wrote on Facebook on Friday evening.

Lutsenko also announced about plans as for investigative actions and motions to be lodged with a court to select a preventive measure.

"As we've promised, the law enforcers did their best to avoid extreme violence and bloodshed," he added.

In turn, Director of the Interior Ministry's media liaison office Artem Shevchenko shared some detention-related details with Interfax-Ukraine, noting that it had happened "without any resistance, without using force or causing any casualties."

"In keeping with an order given by the Prosecutor General's Office, the National Police detained the wanted and suspected person [Saakashvili] and brought [him] to the investigative agencies," Shevchenko said.

In his words, the operation took place not in a tent camp, but in another place and another district, so that other people would not suffer. "He [Saakashvili] was sent to the investigative agencies. The police's functions ended here," he added.
