Ukraine looks for most effective mechanisms for intensifying control on border with Russia - Klimkin

Ukraine is looking for an optimal combination of mechanisms for intensifying control on the border with the Russian Federation, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said.

These mechanisms will, on one hand, work for the safety of Ukraine, and, on the other hand, will not hurt Ukrainian citizens, including those who are on the territories uncontrolled by Kyiv, he said.

"We should reliably control who crosses our border. We are in a state of war with Russia. Therefore, we should work on introducing effective control. For this reason, I believe we should go over to biometric passports. Then we should gradually go over to a requirement to announce trips. This will give us a possibility of additional control," Klimkin told a briefing in Odesa on Wednesday.

Such an approach does not abolish the possibility of moving towards the introduction of a visa regime with Russia, he said.

"We understand perfectly that visas don't work now the way they worked 20 years ago. And everyone understands very well that visas that are just stamped in passport are becoming a thing of the past. The future belongs to electronic visas. And we are working on making Ukrainian visas electronic," Klimkin said.
