Decentralization is clue to weed out corruption in Ukraine

Polish Ambassador to Ukraine Jan Pieklo has said that the decentralization reform would be a clue for weeding out corruption in Ukraine.

"I think that decentralization is a clue to remove corruption. If money is distributed from taxes, the entire tax system would lay on local authorities. It would be harder to steal this money, as people at the local level would be able to monitor the situation. If the money goes from the regions to the central city and then it is returned back to local authorities somehow, there is a large temptation and opportunity to put this money in own pocket," Pieklo said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

He said that the decentralization reform in Ukraine becomes a hostage of Minsk agreements.

"I understand that the introduction of this reform is moving hardly at all, as it is a kind of hostage of the Minsk process, but it is important," the Polish diplomat said.

Pieklo also pointed out the importance of functioning of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and Special Anti-corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP).

"These are right steps to overcome corruption. We are ready to support Ukraine on this way. We believe that officials would take strong measures to combat corruption," he said.
