Peat bog fires spreading in Ukraine's Lviv region, casualties occur

Over 53,000 square meters of peat bogs are ablaze in Lviv region, the Lviv region department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine has said.

Five fires broke out over the past day, in addition to the eight burning earlier. The fires are being extinguished.

The department asked local residents to be careful when walking in the wilderness. Besides, rescuers urged people not to burn dry grass or litter, which might also cause large-scale fires and casualties. Five people have been killed and another five have suffered burns due to burning dry grass in their vegetable gardens and in the fields since the beginning of this month.

Up to 30 fires caused by the burning of dry grass have been registered daily in August, the department said
