Rada urges UN to back formation of international tribunal on MH17 disaster - resolution

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has urged the United Nations and the international community to support the establishment of an international tribunal to prosecute those responsible for the downing of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine in 2014.

A total of 248 lawmakers voted for the corresponding resolution of the Verkhovna Rada addressed "to the UN and the national parliaments of the world in order to create an international tribunal to prosecute those responsible for crimes related to the downed aircraft of the Malaysia Airlines which was carrying out flight MH17 on July 17, 2014."

"The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine appeals to the UN and all the nations of the world to support through passing the UN resolution the establishment of an international tribunal to prosecute those responsible for this crime," the text of the appeal reads.

The Ukrainian parliament spoke for the support of the joint initiative of Ukraine, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Australia and Belgium to set up an international tribunal under the aegis of the United Nations to ensure the realization of the principle of unavoidability of punishment.

"Meanwhile, the Russian leadership tries to thwart the investigation of this crime and to mislead the world community. The Russian Federation, as an aggressor state, which annexed Crimea, occupied part of Donbas and turned its troops into bloodthirsty terrorists, has no moral or legal right to block the decision of the UN Security Council to establish the said international tribunal," the appeal reads.
