Prosecutors begin investigation into Mukacheve events

The investigative department of the prosecutor's office of Ukraine's Zakarpattia region has opened an investigation into the fact of creation of a criminal organization and a terrorist attack in regard of the exchange of fire in Mukacheve.

"Information on the criminal offences tentatively classed as crimes enshrined by Part 3 of Article 258 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code (a terrorist attack) and Article 255 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code (the creation of a criminal organization) has been included in the unified register of pre-trial investigations," a report posted on the website of the Zakarpattia region's prosecutors on Saturday evening says.

The Ukrainian prosecutor general has taken the investigation under his personal control. An interdepartmental investigative group composed of prosecutors, Interior Ministry officials and officials from the Ukrainian Security Service department in the region has been created.

The prosecutors said two dozens of armed people "in camouflage uniform with the words Right Sector on it and Right Sector stickers on their cars arranged a meeting with local residents in a cafe in Mukacheve around 2:00 p.m. on July 11 with the purpose of distributing spheres of influence.

After a conflict began, the said persons opened fire with firearms in the cafe. The police officers who came to the scene were prevented from leaving the territory of the cafe and gunmen opened fire to kill o the police officers, using RPG 7 grenade launchers, Kalashnikov guns, and other firearms.

As a result, two police vehicles and were destroyed and civilians' cars were destroyed. Six police officers and three civilians were reportedly wounded. Five people who too part in the conflict on the side of the Right Sector supporters were also hurt," the prosecutors said.

After that, the people in camouflage, who had not fulfilled the demands made by the law enforcement officials and resisted them with weapons in their hands, headed in the direction of dachas near Mukacheve, where they made barricades.

"As of 6:00 p.m., the said persons refused to surrender their weapons and continued to resist and threaten with armed resistance […] The operation to disarm the criminals continues," the report says.
