Statements on reinstatement of Ukraine's nuclear status not leading to positive solutions - diplomat

Valeriy Chaly, the newly-appointed Ukrainian ambassador to the United States, is skeptical about speculations on the possible reinstatement of Ukraine's nuclear status.

"Any allegations that Ukraine wants to regain its nuclear status and possess nuclear weapons are not leading to positive solutions. I can be criticized, but I can explain in a broad discussion why it is so. I am not talking about the past and about what we could have retained and what not. I am talking about today," Chaly said on Channel Five on Friday evening.

"Ukraine parted with the third largest nuclear weapons potential in the world, and we are an active participant in the nonproliferation mechanism for such weapons. And our voice and our demands on this basis should sound louder. We are entitled to have more diverse instruments to ensure our security," Chaly said.
