Oil depot fire no source of danger to nearby military base - Ukraine security chief

The secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, Oleksandr Turchynov, denied on Tuesday that a current fire at an oil depot near Kyiv posed any danger to a nearby military base.

The situation at the depot in the village of Kriachky, Vasylkiv district, "is under the full control of firefighters," the council said in a statement, citing Turchynov.

"There is no longer any danger of the flames spreading to the military base or to the neighboring oil depot, and so the Committee [an ad hoc committee to deal with the fire] has decided not to evacuate people from the 10-kilometer zone," the statement quoted Turchynov as saying.

Turchynov said committee chief Mykola Chechotkin, who heads the State Service for Emergency Situations, had told him that the firefighters had "started localizing the fire on the premises of the depot itself."

The depot belongs to BRSM-Nafta, a company that owns a chain of filling stations.
