30%-70% of medical workers in conflict zone either leave or die – WHO

Due to military operations in eastern Ukraine over 5 million people don't have access to medical treatment, over 50 medical facilities are partially or completely destroyed in the region, and 30% to 70% of medical workers in the conflict zone have either left the area or have died, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.

Ukraine needs urgent help worth at least $23 million to provide medical help for over 5 million people in eastern Ukraine, 1.4 million of who are socially vulnerable and are in desperate need of humanitarian help.

According to Dorit Nitzan, WHO Representative in Ukraine, almost 700,000 IDPs in Ukraine are facing health care issues, including Roma people, children, elderly, handicapped persons, those with chronic diseases, pregnant women, and people suffering from cancer or diabetes.

According to the press release, due to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, the country's Health Ministry suggested that the WHO temporarily take responsibility for purchasing and distributing important medicines needed by the health care system.

The WHO has studied the possibility of increasing their aid for Ukraine, particularly in providing medical services for socially vulnerable groups through mobile hospitals in regions with a high level of infectious (tuberculosis, HIV and poliomyelitis) and non-contagious diseases. The WHO is also looking into the possibility of delivering medicines and medical products to treat hundreds of thousands of people in cooperation with the Norwegian and Israeli governments.
