Crisis in Ukrainian-Russian relations threatens whole world – Latvian PM

The crisis in Ukrainian-Russian relations threatens the security of Europe and the whole world, Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma has said, during the European Parliament's sitting in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

Russian actions against Ukraine aren't just a bilateral issue, she said.

According to her, the best way to resolve the crisis is to support EU unity. The EU must insist on this principle, Straujuma said in her concluding speech, on the results of a discussion on Latvia's chairmanship of the EU for January-June 2015.

According to her, work related to the crisis must be directed in three ways. First of all, political and practical support for Ukraine and other Eastern Partnership countries should be provided only if reforms are realized in these states.

Second of all, the EU must work with Russia. A diplomatic dialogue must continue, but we must also leverage them and demand that the Minsk agreements be observed and international law be respected, Straujuma said.

In addition, she also said that the security of both EU and non-member states should be preserved.

The PM promised that, during Latvia's chairmanship, Riga would try to find an effective and peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine, while respecting the country's territorial integrity and independence.

Each one of us, including Russia, believes that it's important that Ukraine should be strong and stable, the head of Latvian government noted.

She also thanked the European Commission for its economic aid for Ukraine.
