Belarusian president forecasts protracted conflict in eastern Ukraine

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko says the conflict in eastern Ukraine may be protracted.
"Minsk Contact Group members have stopped the manslaughter in eastern Ukraine but the conflict is not over yet. It is very easy to unleash a conflict but it is very difficult to resolve it. The consequences will be catastrophic, in particular, at the psychological level. I think there will be no war because neither side can win. And they are aware of that. I cannot understand such a war: where brothers fight against brothers. Such wars have no winners," Lukashenko said at a press conference in Chisinau on Wednesday.
In the opinion of the Belarusian president, Russia has not been a party to that war.
"If Russia had all over sudden decided to engage in that war, it would not have won either. Things would have gotten even worse," he said.
Lukashenko added that Belarus would not allow a situation of the Ukrainian kind to happen on its territory.
"We will do everything to prevent a similar situation in Belarus. I am taking care of my country and the world as a whole. I should not be called a peacekeeper. I am simply doing what other presidents have asked me to do. I am an average person but I have a personal motivation: I like children and I cannot stand them crying. Moreover, the death of children is a catastrophe. This must stop," Lukashenko stressed.
The Belarusian president came to Moldova on a two-day official visit. He negotiated with Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti on Wednesday. Six intergovernmental agreements on cooperation in various fields have been signed. The visit continues on Thursday.
