Ukraine defense minister denies army being used against protesters

Ukraine's acting defense minister has denied allegations that the army is being used against protesters.

"Those are groundless rumors, and the information that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are being used against peaceful demonstrators is a provocation. No troops or military equipment are being used to settle the political crisis, which has become exacerbated in the country today. Moreover, under the constitution, the armed forces cannot be used to limit the rights and freedoms of citizens," Pavlo Lebedev told Interfax-Ukraine in an exclusive interview.

He said military equipment had been used in the regions of Odesa and Rivne and elsewhere in Ukraine to clear streets from abnormally abundant snow and rescue vehicles from snowdrifts.
