Justice minister says police who exceeded powers will not be amnestied

Law enforcers who broke the law during mass rallies will not be amnestied under the amnesty law adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on January 29, Justice Minister Olena Lukash said at a meeting with foreign ambassadors in Kyiv on Thursday.

While answering a question from Swedish Ambassador to Ukraine Andreas von Beckerath, Lukash said: "If I understand you correctly, you're asking whether those who committed official crimes in the form of abuse of office will be amnestied. No, they won't be amnestied. Yesterday's law does not contain such a provision."

An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that when asking the question, the ambassador said that law enforcement officers had not been punished for their illegal actions in relation to protesters.

"We have seen several examples of the [illegal] treatment of activists since the beginning of the crisis, but we haven't seen people being made to answer for these crimes," he said.
