OSCE hopes those guilty of beating reporters in Ukraine to be held criminally liable

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) hopes that the incidents of beating reporters will be thoroughly investigated and that those guilty will be held liable, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovic said.

"What was happening in Ukraine from Friday to Monday causes great concern and the OSCE hopes that everything is all right with the reporters who were beaten," Mijatovic said at a briefing in the framework of the OSCE ministerial meeting in Kyiv on Thursday.

It is hoped that comprehensive investigation of these incidents will be held and that all guilty parties will be held accountable and brought to court, Mijatovic said.

Dozens of free journalists were beaten in Ukraine in the past week - they were assaulted, including by law enforcement authorities, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said.

It is essential that everyone, who supports freedom, democracy, openness and transparency, stand by observing the rights of reporters in the OSCE space, Nuland said.
