The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry has confirmed that two people were injured as a result of a helicopter crash in the Zhulebino residential area in southeastern Moscow on Tuesday.

"The accident occurred at 56, Privolnaya street," spokesman for the ministry's Moscow department Viktor Biryukov told Interfax.

A fire broke out after the crash, he said. "Flames have spread over an area of 20 square meters," Biryukov added.

He said two people were injured, but did not elaborate.

A source told Interfax that both of the injured people are the pilots. They have been taken to Hospital 36.

The helicopter is a Kamov Ka-52 that was undergoing trials, he said.

The Moscow Police Department said the crash was near 49, Privolnaya Street.

Police personnel arrived, cordoned off the scene and called emergency services. They maintained order and are making passageways available for specialized vehicles, it said.

The Ka-52 attack helicopter is capable of destroying armored and non-armored military hardware, personnel and air targets. It is an advanced version of the Ka-50 Black Shark helicopter gunship.

Its most recent crash occurred on March 12 2012 near Torzhok in the Tver region. One pilot was killed and the other was injured but later died in the hospital. The crash was probed on counts of violating flight regulations and preparations for the flight. The crash could have been caused by poor weather, reports said.
