Cox-Kwasniewski mission to return to Ukraine next week, Nemyria says

The European Parliament's monitoring mission of former EP President Pat Cox and former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski will visit Ukraine next week, Deputy Chairman of the Batkivschyna Party Hryhoriy Nemyria told Interfax-Ukraine in Brussels on Thursday.

Nemyria attended a meeting of the EPP summit, which is being held ahead of the EU summit.

In particular, while discussing the situation in Ukraine in the context of the Cox-Kwasniewski mission the sides noted that "every day counts."

As reported, Cox and Kwasniewski became observers from the European Parliament on the trial of ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko and began work on June 11, 2012. The relevant agreement was reached between Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov and President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz.

Their mandate was subsequently expanded to include the court proceedings involving former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko and former Acting Defense Minister of Ukraine Valeriy Ivaschenko.

On April 18, 2013, the mission's report was discussed in Strasbourg at a meeting of the Conference of Presidents. Following that discussion, Schulz announced that the participants of the meeting had decided to prolong the mission until September 2013.

EP President Martin Schulz said that it was necessary to find a solution to the problem of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko that would satisfy all sides.

On October 4, 2013, it was announced that Kwasniewski and Cox had handed to Tymoshenko a proposal to undergo treatment in Germany and the ex-premier had accepted it. They also submitted a petition to the Ukrainian president asking him to pardon Tymoshenko.
