EP to decide on Cox-Kwasniewski mission prospects in late January

President of the European Parliament (EP) Martin Schulz is to hold a private meeting with former Polish President Alexander Kwasniewski and former European Parliament President Pat Cox, who are the members of the EP's observation mission on the trials of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and former Interior Minister of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko, on January 9.

No decisions will be made on the results of the meeting. The Conference of Presidents of the EP in late January will decide whether the observation mission should be prolonged, an Interfax-Ukraine reporter was told at the EP on Tuesday. The Conference of Presidents is the governing body of the EP. It consists of the EP President and the chairmen of the political groups.

According to the source, Schulz will hold the meeting with the EP's observers behind closed doors and the participants of the meeting will not comment on it, as no decisions would be made at the meeting.

"The Conference of Presidents will be held at the end of the month. If they decide to complete the mission, then the final report on it will be drawn up and published in the shortest possible time. If the Conference of Presidents decides to prolong the mission, it will continue to work," the source said.

Earlier, Kwasniewski said that the mandate of the mission expired at the end of 2012, and the mission would present its final report at the beginning of 2013. An interim report of the mission was passed to the European Parliament in October 2, 2012.

The Cox-Kwasniewski mission on the Tymoshenko case started to work in Ukraine on June 11, 2012. Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and EP President Martin Schulz reached relevant agreements.

Later on, the mission's mandate was expanded to the Lutsenko case and the trial on former Acting Defense Minister of Ukraine Valeriy Ivaschenko.

The mission's activities were suspended during the parliamentary elections in Ukraine and resumed after them.
