UN documents 376 cases of conflict-related sexual violence as of Aug 31

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission documented 376 cases of conflict-related sexual violence from February 24, 2022 to August 31, 2024, involving men, women, girls and boys.

As reported by the press service of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, the mission closely cooperates with victims in documenting cases of conflict-related sexual violence and informing the public about this violation.

"In the period 24 February 2022 to 31 August 2024, the Mission has documented 376 cases of CRSV against 262 men, 104 women, 10 girls, and 2 boys. This grave form of GBV affects individuals across genders, with over half of documented cases involving men, mainly men who were subjected to torture in places of detention in occupied territory or the Russian Federation," the statement reads.

The HRMMU said conflict-related sexual violence is a violation of international human, humanitarian and criminal law. Preventing such violence and holding perpetrators accountable is a shared responsibility based on States' human rights obligations.

In Ukraine, against the backdrop of the war, the "16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence" campaign begins, taking place immediately after another important date – 1,000 days since the full-scale invasion of Russia.

The campaign unites people to speak out against gender-based violence. "In Ukraine, many survivors have been willing to come forward and speak out about conflict-related sexual violence. They make the truth known about sexual violence being inflicted upon them. This is a critical step in bringing the perpetrators to justice and preventing the spread of this scourge," the UN said.
