Ukraine, Romania working to introduce mirror approaches to ensure national minorities’ rights – Shmyhal-Ciolacu meeting

Ukraine and Romania are working to introduce mirror approaches to ensure the rights of national minorities. This follows from statements by Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal at a joint press conference on Wednesday.

“I am confident that in the future we will closely cooperate in terms of ensuring the rights of national minorities according to the mirror principle. Thus, all Romanians who live in Ukraine will have the same rights as Ukrainians who live in Romania,” Ciolacu said.

He also noted that Romania can provide Ukraine with its legislation on the issue of national minorities, since, according to him, it is an example of best practices in protecting the rights of national minorities.

“We, at the government level, have now agreed to further develop the introduction of mirror measures between national minorities in our countries,” added Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal.

According to him, at the moment the countries are exchanging official statistics in order to determine further measures to introduce mirror approaches.
