Energy and Coal Industry Minister Ihor Nasalyk estimates Ukrainian thermal power plants' demand for anthracite coal until the end of 2017 at 4.2 million tonnes.

He announced the forecast at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday.

"We're running four projects to minimize coal consumption. I'd like to tell you that we need only 4.2 million tonnes of anthracite by the end of the year against 9.5 million tonnes sold in 2016," he said.

As was reported, PJSC Centrenergo, which operates two thermal power plants that consumer anthracite, plans to import 2.5 million tonnes of coal via seaports from May 2017 to May 2018.

Private energy holding DTEK also needs anthracite for its three thermal power plants.
