DTEK denies information that holding refuses to work with Lvivvuhillia, calls on energy ministry to rely on Ukrainian coal

DTEK energy holding has denied information that the holding refused to buy coal from state-run enterprise Lvivvuhillia, the holding calls on the Energy and Coal Industry Ministry of Ukraine to rely on consumption of Ukrainian-made coal.

"In 2015, DTEK's TPPs [thermal power plants] bought 580,000 tonnes of coal from Ukrainian coalmines, and over 450,000 tonnes from the Lviv-Volyn basin. Information that DTEK refuses to work with state coalmines, including coalmines in the Lviv-Volyn basin, is untrue," the holding said.

The press service of DTEK reported that since November 2015, the holding has been negotiating with state enterprise Centrenergo and the Energy and Coal Industry Ministry on finding a way out of a critical situation in the heating generation and coal industry.

"Our principled position is unchanged: Ukrainian energy generation must consume Ukrainian coal. Today, most of units were mothballed… Today the state energy policy should focus on stimulating demand on Ukrainian coal and electricity," the press service said, citing DTEK Energo Commercial Director Vitaliy Butenko.

DTEK said that the current level of loading of coal-consuming units of TPPS is 36%, and 30 units with a total capacity of 6,405 MW were mothballed.

"Coal burning at Ukrainian TPPs fell by more than one third compared to 2013," DTEK said
