The outflow of funds from banking deposits has totaled UAH 17.2 billion since early 2015, Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Valeriya Gontareva has said.

"The NBU is issuing refinancing only for the outflow of deposits of individuals in the sum of guaranteed deposits. Why do we do this? Outflow in the system is registered without let-up… Since early 2015 outflow came to UAH 17.2 billion, and the NBU spent UAH 4.7 billion to pay the guaranteed deposits. The rest of the sum to return deposits was covered by their own liquidity of banks," she said at a conference organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, held in Kyiv on February 27.

As reported, deposits held in the national currency in January fell by 2.2% compared to the previous month, to UAH 357.9 billion. Deposits owned by companies fell by 2%, to UAH 166.4 billion, and deposits owned by individuals fell by 2.3%, to UAH 191.5 billion.

Deposits held in foreign currency decreased by 4%, to $18.7 billion, including a fall of 4.6% in deposits owned by companies, to $5.5 billion and a fall of 3.8% in deposits owned by individuals, to $13.2 billion.
