Miller: Gazprom delays regime of Ukrainian upfront gas payment till June 16

Gazprom will not initiate the regime of upfront payment for gas delivered to Ukraine until 1000 on June 16, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said after negotiations with European Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger.

Miller said the European Commission and the Russian delegation had held bilateral consultations.

"The Russian side has taken a step forward and decided to delay the upfront payment regime until 10 a.m. on Monday in order to continue negotiations which have been very intensive in the past few days," Miller said.

"Relevant directives will be given in the company Gazprom and the upfront payment regime will not be put into place at 10 a.m. tomorrow," Gazprom CEO continued.

Miller also noted that the Russian side was hopeful of the success of bilateral and trilateral negotiations due to take place in Brussels on June 11.

"We hope for a constructive dialogue in the bilateral format of the European Commission and the Russian delegation and the Russian delegation and the Ukrainian side, and trilateral negotiations which will take place tomorrow [on Wednesday] in Brussels," he said.

The negotiations, which also involved Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak, began at around 2230 European time and lasted for more than three hours. Trilateral negotiations in the Russia-Ukraine-EU format have been scheduled for 0930 European time. Bilateral consultations will be held prior to that.
