DTEK repairs 9,200 km of power lines in preparation for winter
In the first half of 2024, the distribution system operators (DSOs) of DTEK Grids repaired approximately 9,200 km of power lines of various voltage classes and 3,300 substations and distribution points of different voltage levels.
The repairs were part of DTEK's maintenance and investment programs. The DSOs also invested over UAH 2.2 billion in upgrading energy infrastructure during the first half of the year, according to a company press release on Friday.
Despite the ongoing full-scale military aggression, scheduled maintenance work is carried out annually to ensure the resilience of the power grid during peak loads in the autumn-winter period.
Specifically, DTEK specialists have reconstructed four distribution points and modernized 17 substations. The company said that due to the use of stabilization outage schedules, energy equipment wears out faster and breaks down more frequently, increasing the need for investment.
"For the first half of 2024, within the investment program, the total volume of investments since the beginning of the year amounted to over UAH 2.2 billion. By the end of the year, we plan to additionally invest over UAH 2.6 billion in the development and modernization of energy infrastructure," said Oleksandr Fomenko, CEO of DTEK Grids, as quoted in the press release.
DTEK Grids continues to replace outdated meters with expiring service lives, installing "smart" meters in their place. Specifically, in January-June, the company replaced 89,500 meters, with plans to replace another 91,900 by the end of the year.
To prepare as effectively as possible for the 2024/25 heating season, the company also urged maintenance companies for apartment buildings, such as housing and utilities companies, homeowner associations, and management companies, to inspect their equipment, perform necessary maintenance, and fix any potential issues. "Statistics show that people are left without electricity in their homes 25% of the time due to accidents in local networks," DTEK said.
DTEK Grids operates electricity distribution and power grid management businesses in Kyiv, Kyiv region, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, and Odesa regions. The DSOs of the energy holding serve 5.5 million households and 158,000 businesses.
