Football Federation of Ukraine to submit bid to host Euro 2020 matches

The executive committee of the Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU) has made a decision on the submission by Ukraine of a bid to host the matches of the Euro 2020 European Football Championship, the FFU's press service reported on Tuesday.

Such a decision was unanimously made by the executive committee's members.

FFU First Vice President Anatoliy Popov said at a briefing after a meeting of the executive committee that this question was currently at the procedural stage.

"A fundamental decision has been made. You know the opinion of the country's president on this issue," he said.

Popov said that there were minuses and pluses in the issue of the submission by Ukraine of a bid to host Euro 2020 matches.

"On the one hand, there's the minus that we have already held such a competition and will again bid to host it in eight years, but, on the other hand, there is the huge plus that Ukraine and Poland successfully held Euro 2012," he said.

He said that it is currently unclear whether Ukraine will nominate one or two cities to host the matches of the championship.

"All cities that participated in Euro 2012 can bid [to host Euro 2012 matches]. Odesa can also submit a bid - there is also a great stadium there, but this will already be the next stage," Popov said.

He said that according to UEFA procedure, the application submission process begins in April 2013, applications should be formally confirmed in September 2013, candidate cities will submit their dossiers in April-May 2014, and the UEFA Executive Committee will name Euro 2020 host cities in September 2014.

"We have time, and we have made the first step," he said.

As reported, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said during the Dialog with the Country live television show on February 22 that the country plans to submit a bid to include its cities in the list of Euro 2020 hosts.

The Euro 2020 European Football Championship will be staged in 13 major cities throughout Europe. Such a decision was taken by the UEFA Executive Committee in Lausanne on December 6, 2012.

The matches will be split into 13 different packages, with 12 ordinary packages including three group matches and one knockout round (round of 16 or quarter-final), and one package for the semi-finals and the final.

There will only be a maximum of one venue per country, meaning one stadium for each of the available 13 packages. Both semi-finals and the final will be played in one stadium.

Each association will be allowed to present up to two bids, one for the ordinary package and one for the semi-finals/final package. Each national association can decide to present the same city for these two bids or two different cities.

Projected stadiums will be admitted in the bidding process, with a deadline of 2016 for the construction of any new stadium to start, failing which the decision on such a host city could be reviewed.
