The new head coach of Ukraine's national football team, Mykhailo Fomenko, has promised that the national team under his leadership will play aggressive and attacking football and try to win through to the World Cup in 2014.

"I'd say that the situation is very difficult, and I realize my responsibility. At the same time, our place in the table is not hopeless. I'm in no way refusing to fulfill the task that has been set. I will make every effort to ensure that the national team worthily passes the qualifying stage and gets through to the finals of the 2014 World Cup. Anyway, we will play aggressive and attacking football, trying to win every match," he said in an interview with the press service of the Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU).

Fomenko said that Ukraine had not been in the best mental and physical condition during its first World Cup qualifiers.

"The reasons for this are currently unknown to me. It's necessary to understand the situation, talk to the players," he said.

Fomenko said he has no doubt that the national team will have new players.

"Now, I'm analyzing and gathering information on the candidates. I have no doubt that newcomers will definitely join the team. I want us to create a responsible atmosphere in the team so that it tries to win every game," he said.

Fomenko was elected head coach of Ukraine's national football team at a meeting of the FFU Executive Committee on December 26.

Ukraine has won only two points in the first three qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Montenegro is on top of Group H, with ten points from four games, and England has eight points. Poland is third (five points from three games), Moldova is fourth (four points in four matches), Ukraine is fifth, with only two points, and San Marino has no points.

Ukraine has been left without its head coach since late September 2012 after Oleh Blokhin decided to take charge of Dynamo Kyiv. The Football Federation of Ukraine is continuing to search for a manager for the national team.
