Up to 2,000 apartments for displaced people to be built in Ukraine with German funds – IOM

The Ministry for the Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), five regional state administrations and 12 communities signed memorandums of cooperation on Friday, which will provide affordable housing for displaced people and war-affected people.

As the IOM press service reported on Friday, the project, financed by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development through the German Development Bank, provides for the construction of up to 2,000 apartments for approximately 6,000 people in the cities of Khotyn and Chernivtsi in Chernivtsi region, Kolomyia in Ivano-Frankivsk region, Irpin and the village of Horenka in Kyiv region, Agronomichne, Ladyzhyn and Khmelnyk in Vinnytsia region, Stary Sambir, Drohobych and Kamianka-Buzka in Lviv region.

At the same time, the last two communities receive migrants from Severodonetsk, Luhansk region, with which a memorandum of understanding was also signed on the implementation of a housing project.

"Housing will be made available to internally displaced persons and vulnerable local populations through a rental mechanism that will be developed and implemented as part of the project," the ministry said.

The Ministry for the Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories will provide overall coordination of the project.

"According to the latest IOM data, a fifth of internally displaced people plan to remain and integrate in their current place of residence. Finding long-term solutions to housing problems is the key to success... The legal and technical provisions tested within the framework of the affordable housing project can become the basis for further large-scale projects of international assistance in the field of housing policy in Ukraine," Chief of Mission of IOM Ukraine Alessia Schiavon said.
