Language Ombudsman, Ukrainian Society of Deaf in favour of adoption of law on Ukrainian Sign language

Commissioner for the Protection of the state language Taras Kremin, head of the Ukrainian Society of the Deaf Iryna Chepchina and Commissioner of Kyiv City Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Lesia Petrovska noted the need to adopt a law on the Ukrainian sign language.
"The parties discussed a wide range of issues related to barrier-free, inclusivity and respect for the rights of sign speakers to receive information and services in the Ukrainian sign language … Separately, the participants of the meeting noted the need to adopt a law on the Ukrainian sign language, which was registered in parliament back in October 2019," the press service of the language Ombudsman said following the meeting on Thursday.
They also discussed the need for the de-russification of the sign language, the expediency of approving the standard of the Ukrainian language, providing conditions for passing the exam on the level of proficiency in the state language by sign speakers, and the education of children with hearing impairments.
