Prosecutor Khan: There're all grounds to believe that ICC will secure justice for Russia's crimes in Ukraine

Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Karim Khan, whose team has been collecting evidence of Russia's war crimes in Ukraine, says there are all grounds for conducting a proper investigation and securing justice in the ICC for genocide and the crimes against humanity.

"Ukraine was injured, this is part of its history… The UN Charter speaks of the need for peaceful settlement of conflicts, but the main thing is to use the jurisdiction we have. This is important. We have jurisdiction on genocide, on crimes against humanity," he said on the air of the national telethon on Monday.

Asked what he could say to Ukrainians who anticipate seeing Russian President Vladimir Putin on trial for the crimes committed in Ukraine, the ICC prosecutor said, "Any legal system works in a way that it starts with collecting evidence of committed crimes… Patience is needed to provide judges and a court with materials. We have to collect the truth, the facts. Not a single person – neither a military commander nor a civilian – nobody has the right to aim weapons at children, hospitals, and the civilian infrastructure. We need to collect evidence and submit them to court."

Khan also said that his team closely cooperates with the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine and its representatives have been constantly present in Ukraine since May 2022.

"That is the truth – to investigate and bring charges. An equal attitude towards all criminals is also important. I have said this a year ago and I am saying it now – we have reasonable grounds to believe that the committed crimes will be investigated and justice will be secured by the International Criminal Court," he said.
