Chair of Verkhovna Rada committee forecasts consequences for Mongolia after refusing to arrest Putin
The violation of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) by Mongolia in terms of the arrest of Vladimir Putin will have consequences for it, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation Oleksandr Merezhko (Servant of the People faction) has said on Tuesday.
"What happened in Mongolia is indeed a violation of the Rome Statute. I am sure that there will be appropriate consequences," he said at a press briefing.
According to the Member of Parliament (MP), the possibility of such consequences, is envisaged both in the Rome Statute itself, for example, it is about disputes arising between states, and in international law.
"An assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute is expected to be held at the end of this year. [...] I hope Ukraine will participate in this assembly as a full member. And it will be necessary to raise this issue on this platform," Merezhko said.
He also noted that if this fails, another mechanism is envisioned – an appeal to the ICC.
The MP emphasized that the activity of the ICC is also based on the activity of the States Parties.
"Here it is important to show a very active position of Ukraine. Much depends on us, including in the implementation of arrest warrants," he said.
