Poroshenko votes in presidential election, reaffirms need for Ukraine to return to family of European countries

Ukrainian presidential candidate and incumbent President Petro Poroshenko cast his ballot in the country's presidential election in Kyiv on Sunday.

"I am confident that the election will be well organized and the freedom of the citizens' choice will be guaranteed. It is an absolutely necessary condition for our movement forward, for Ukraine's return to the family of the European peoples. Let's keep moving forward - to our membership in the European Union and NATO, to continue of our crucial reforms," Poroshenko told reporters after casting his ballot.

Poroshenko voted at a polling station on the premises of the Central House of Officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, located near the Verkhovna Rada headquarters in Kyiv, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported.

Verkhovna Rada Speaker Andriy Parubiy earlier cast his ballot at the same polling station.

Poroshenko came to the polling station in the company of his wife and children.

Ukraine is holding the first round of its presidential election on Sunday. The polling stations will close at 8:00 p.m. A record-large number of candidates – 39 – are running in this presidential election.
