British embassy joins rally urging Russia to release Sentsov, other political prisoners

The British Embassy in Ukraine has called on Russia to release Ukrainian filmmaker Oleh Sentsov, who went on a hunger strike, and other Ukrainian political prisoners.

"UK supports global campaign calling on Russia to release Oleg Sentsov and other political prisoners persecuted for opposing the illegal annexation of Crimea #SaveOlegSentsov," the embassy said on its Facebook page on Saturday.

Earlier on this day, a rally in support of Sentsov and other Ukrainian citizens illegally held in Russia and in Russian-occupied Crimea was held on Independence Square in Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko thanked everyone who joined demonstrations in various countries around the world in support of Sentsov, who is serving time at a Russian prison.

"I thank everyone who joined the campaign in support of Oleh Sentsov around the world, including Germany, France, Italy, Estonia, Lithuania, Sweden, Georgia, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Portugal, Ukraine, and even Russia. The whole world is angered by the lawlessness and totalitarian methods of the Kremlin regime," Poroshenko wrote on Facebook on Saturday.

According to the Ukrainian human rights initiative LetMyPeopleGo, 64 Ukrainians are currently held in Russia for political reasons.
