ICJ requests information from Russia on implementation of order on resumption of Mejlis' activities – Zerkal

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) of the United Nations has requested the Russian Federation to provide information on the implementation of the court's order regarding the resumption of activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people in Crimea, Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine for European Integration Olena Zerkal has said.

"Now, according to the request, the Russian Federation should explain to the court what was done to create normal conditions for the activities of the Mejlis in Crimea. The court also invited Ukraine to provide information on this issue. We will inform the court of all efforts that have been made to implement the court order, both from the state, and representatives of the Mejlis," she wrote on her Facebook page on Friday.

Zerkal clarified that these are procedural steps to enable the court to assess the real state of affairs.

She recalled that Ukraine's appeal to the UN International Court with a request to clarify the order was due to the fact that during the year the Russian Federation did nothing to fulfill the court's order.

"The only thing we heard is that "we are taking the necessary measures," although preliminary measures, determined by the court, required urgent reaction. This attitude of the Russian Federation means an actual disregard of the UN International Court of Justice," the deputy minister stressed.

As reported, on April 19, 2017, the International Court of Justice (The Hague) within the framework of the lawsuit of Ukraine versus the Russian Federation announced the decision according to which the Russian Federation in Crimea is obliged to ensure the rights of the Crimean Tatars, to allow the activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people and to ensure the availability of education in the Ukrainian language.

On April 24, 2018 Ukraine asked the International Court of Justice in The Hague to provide explanations on the status of implementation of the preliminary court decision as part of Ukraine's proceedings against Russia in the case concerning Application of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, in particular, to restore the activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people.
