We expect tough reaction of Western partners to appointment of Russian president in Ukrainian territory

Leader of the People's Front party, ex-Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk, while on a visit to Washington, has said that he expects a tough reaction of the Western partners to the election of the Russian president on Ukrainian territory.

"We expect a tough reaction of the Western partners to the appointment of the Russian presidential election on Ukrainian territory," Yatsenyuk's statement was quoted by the press service of the People's Front party, published on Wednesday night.

In addition, the leader of the People's Front said that he had held meetings with the U.S. presidential adviser on Europe and Russia, Fiona Hill, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Robert Karem, Democrat leader in the U.S. Congress Nancy Pelosi, and also addressed the Council for External Relations.

Yatsenyuk said that one of the main issues he discussed during the meetings was "a geopolitical issue that is on the agenda of Ukraine and should be on the agenda of the whole world, including the United States of America."

"President Putin holds his election on Ukrainian territory - in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. He appointed these elections, or rather his own reassignment, on March 18 - precisely on the day of illegal annexation, the occupation of the Ukrainian territory," the message reads.

"We expect tough reaction from our Western partners and from the U.S. that elections on Ukrainian territory can only be held in relation to the president of Ukraine, and not the Russian president. And here the world and the United States of America, primarily, is a leader of free world, must declare its position," the leader of the People's Front said.

He said that the People's Front faction had registered the draft resolution on the appeal of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to the G7, the OSCE and the entire free world in connection with the illegal preparation of the presidential elections in the temporarily occupied part of Ukraine: "I think that the Ukrainian parliament will show its will. Now it is necessary for the United States, the G-7 countries, and the European Union to take a position on the illegality of the Russian presidential election on Ukrainian territory."

Ex-Prime Minister of Ukraine also stressed that he welcomed the U.S. decision on the so-called "Kremlin list."

"The question is in the implementation of this decision, namely, the imposition of sanctions against persons who have committed international crimes both against the Ukrainian state and against the Western world, including that it is no secret that Russia is interfering in the Western elections. Russia will interfere in the Ukrainian elections. The Ukrainian presidential, and parliamentary elections will be no less significant for Putin than elections in the Western world, or even his own re-election," said Yatsenyuk.

As reported, Yatsenyuk began his visit to Washington with a meeting with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Wess Mitchell.

"I started the visit to Washington with a meeting with Wess Mitchell, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs. I am impressed by the practical, result-oriented attitude of the Ukrainian State Department team," Yatsenyuk wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

The ex-premier stressed the mutual understanding of partners in the consideration of the raised issues.

"In conversation with Wess Mitchell, we've discussed the most important issues on the bilateral agenda that should be implemented this year: security, economic development, privatization and combating corruption. I am glad that our approaches, assessments and expectations coincide," he added.
