Office of Ukrainian Ombudsman received 158,000 complaints from citizens in 2017

The Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada received 158,000 complaints over the past year, Ombudsman Valeriya Lutkovska has said.

"Last year there was a sharp increase in the number of applications – 158,000. This indicates the level of trust in the Office, but on the other hand it creates an extraordinary strain," she said at a press conference in Kyiv on Monday.

Lutkovska noted that as early as 2012, the development strategy for the Office was created for the period of 2012-2017. "Last year, we summed up the results and are ready to submit a strategy for 2018-2020," the ombudsman said.

Among the strategic goals is to ensure effective response to violations and effective prevention of violations of human rights and freedoms, increase awareness of rights and freedoms, protect human rights in armed conflict, and protect human rights after the restoration of state sovereignty in the occupied territories.
