Saakashvili resignation in Ukraine did not come as surprise to his supporters in Georgia

David Darchiashvili, one of the leaders of the Georgian opposition party United National Movement, said he believes Mikheil Saakashvili, head of the Odesa regional administration, who was left without the support of the central Ukrainian authorities, had to leave his post.

"It was obvious, especially recently, that Mikheil Saakashvili has no political support in Ukraine, no support from the central Ukrainian authorities. His decision to leave his post is due to the current socio-political situation in Ukraine," Darchiashvili told reporters on Monday.

Darchiashvili said he believes Saakashvili will stay in Ukrainian politics as an independent opposition politician. "This probably does not mean that Saakashvili will be in opposition to all Ukrainian political forces. I know that he has normal relations with President Poroshenko," Darchiashvili said.

He said he currently does not know Saakashvili's further plans.

Georgia's ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili said on Monday he had decided to resign from his post as head of the Odesa regional state administration. In the meantime, several months ago Saakashvili said on social networking sites that he did not rule out the creation in Ukraine of a new opposition political organization, which will comprise young reformers.
