Evidence of former Berkut policemen involvement in crimes on Maidan enough

The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine (PGO) has gathered a sufficient body of evidence against former officers of the Berkut special task force of the Interior Ministry, including against former commander of Berkut Kyiv company, who committed crimes against Euromaidan activists, Senior Prosecutor of Prosecutor General's Office Oleksiy Donskoy said.

Answering a question in an interview with Hromadske TV, regarding evidence to prove it was Sadovnyk who commanded two other Berkut policemen Serhiy Zinchenko and Pavlo Ambroskin, whi are accused of killing Euromaidan activists, Donskoy said: "Yes, indeed, there is evidence also coming from public sources; there are video recordings, which show that Sadovnyk directly commanded them [Zinchenko and Ambroskin] on the spot, ordered how they should withdraw, or on the contrary, which positions they should hold, and how they should act. That is to say, indeed, these were not chaotic actions and they were ordered by Sadovnyk from the first moment he had appeared there."

At the same time, the senior prosecutor said that Sadovnyk's escape has greatly damaged the inquiry despite the sufficient body of evidence it has already collected. "We believe that today we have collected sufficient body of evidence. It is more than sufficient to complete the investigation and convict these individuals. However, the investigation earlier indeed suffered a great loss as a result of Sadovnyk's escape. That is because at that stage the body of evidence was in many ways built on his case through and on that of his subordinates," Donskoy said.

As reported, Ukraine's PGO had been investigating a criminal case on mass killings of people in Kyiv during February 18-20. As a part of the investigation, a number of Berkut special task force representatives, in particular, a company commander and two more policemen were arrested; they were summoned to court.

All the three were arrested as a restriction measure, however, later Pechersky District Court changed the restriction measure to home arrest for Sadovnyk, the former special task force company commander of Berkut police special task force regiment in Kyiv police department. Thereafter, Sadovnyk disappeared and is now wanted by law enforcers.

Ambroskin and Zinchenko, former officers of the Interior Ministry's Berkut special task force, who were charged with the mass killings in the Kyiv center, remain under arrest.
