Yatseniuk orders coordination of ASF countering with Moscow

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk has ordered the State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service to hold consultations with Russia on preventing the spread of the African Swine Fever (ASF) virus.

"There is a keynote principle of international law, the principle of reciprocity. So, could you please hold consultations about the spread of the African Swine Fever and ultimate measures for stopping it on reciprocal grounds," Yatseniuk said at a meeting of the state commission on technology-related environmental safety and emergency situations in Kyiv on Friday, addressing State Veterinarian and Phytosanitary Service head Oleksandr Verzhykhovsky.

Yatseniuk also said that Ukraine was regularly providing ASF reports to European entities and the World Health Organization and that Russia, a member of that organization, could study them.

Verzhykhovsky responded that Russia's Federal Veterinarian and Phytosanitary Surveillance Service asked Ukraine to provide information about ASF countermeasures and to limit exports from the affected areas.

Ukraine has seen over 30 ASF outbreaks in the Zaporizhia, Luhansk, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Rivne regions since 2012.

There have been new ASF cases lately, including in various districts of the Kyiv region. Over 60,000 pigs had to be slaughtered at one farm.
