Two Ukrainians die in terrorist attack on hotel in Mali – K

Two Ukrainians have been killed as the result of a terrorist attack on a hotel in the town of Sevare in Mali, the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has reported.

"According to official data of the UN mission in Mali (MINUSMA), five employees of MINUSMA, including two citizens of Ukraine, were killed in the terrorist attack on the Byblos hotel in the town of Sevare (Mali). The investigation is underway and the circumstances of their deaths are being established. The bodies are located in one of the morgues in the city of Bamako," the statement said.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry noted that the Ukrainian side was working closely with the United Nations headquarters in New York and the UN mission to Mali in terms of consular support and ensuring the repatriation of the bodies of the Ukrainian citizens to their homeland.

The UN Mission in Mali reported the successful conclusion of the anti-terrorist operation in Byblos hotel in Sevare on Saturday, August 8. "Four (4) were rescued at the Hotel Byblos as soon as the operation had ended and were taken to MINUSMA's office in Sevare, where they remain while waiting to be transferred to Bamako. They are nationals of South Africa (2), the Russian Federation (1) and Ukraine (1). They are all in good health. The attackers did not detect their presence in the hotel and MINUSMA was in permanent contact with them throughout the attack and until its end," reads the statement posted on the website of the UN mission.

At the same time, MUNISMA reported that five people lost their lives, including one Malian (a driver working for a company contracted by MINUSMA), one Nepalese, one South African and two Ukrainians.

It was reported earlier that on August 7, a group of gunmen in Mali attacked a hotel in the town of Sevare, where foreigners frequently stay.
