Supply of Mistral helicopter carriers to Russia not being discussed - French Defense Ministry

The issue of supplying Mistral-class helicopter carriers to Russia is currently not being discussed in France, French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Monday.

"The issue of supplying the combat vessels to Russia is not on the agenda," he said in an interview with RMC radio.

According to earlier reports, the vessels were to be provided to Russia back in 2014, but the French administration refused to fulfill the contractual obligations due to the aggravation of the situation in eastern Ukraine.

The contract for the construction of the two helicopters carriers was signed in June 2011. The value of the contract is 1.2 billion euro. The first helicopter carrier, the Vladivostok, was to be provided by France to Russia back in November 14, 2014.

French President Francois Hollande earlier said he had decided to suspend the delivery of the Vladivostok to Russia due to the situation in eastern Ukraine. Russia, for its part, said it expected the ships or the money back.
