PGO: Businessman Akhmetov questioned by Ukrainian investigators

Investigators from the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office have questioned businessman Rinat Akhmetov about issues relating to the events that took place in Kyiv's Maidan last winter and his possible involvement in the financing of terrorism, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Vitaliy Yarema said.

"Akhmetov was questioned in the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office about two issues: the issue of his stay and relation to the Maidan events and the issue stated in the parliamentary inquiry filed by deputy Iryna Heraschenko on the financing of terrorism," Yarema told a briefing in Kyiv on Monday.

"He was asked all these questions. We received the necessary answers," Yarema said.

The prosecutor also said the Prosecutor General's Office is now checking information on the accusations made against Akhmetov by a deputy of the Severodonetsk city council stating that Akhmetov paid Aidar troops to leave their positions in Schastia, Luhansk region.

According to earlier reports, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office is investigating a case involving the involvement in the financing of terrorism and illegal military groups of Natalia Korolevska, a ember of the Opposition Bloc, and Oleksandr Yefremov, a former Party of regions deputy.

On January 23, 2015, Akhmetov talked with an investigator from the Prosecutor General's Office regarding an investigation into a criminal case involving separatism and financing of terrorism for several hours. He was questioned as a witness in the case.

The press service for Akhmetov earlier said the accusations made by S. Samarsky, a deputy of the Severodonetsk city council, against the businessmen are "utter lies and cheap provocation. The press service suggested that the parliamentarian provide to the investigators or the mass media facts confirming his words.

"If Rinat Akhmetov personally called anyone, say openly whom he called and when. According to this parliamentarian the special services should have recording of Rinat Akhmetov's phone conversations. Show facts. Don't engage in cheap discreditation," the press service for Akhmetov said.
